Curriculum & Languages

Wednesday Workshops in French

On Wednesday mornings, complementary workshops in French are offered to students in the immersion class programme who wish to get to know Paris better and deepen their knowledge of French culture. These fun workshops encourage both linguistic and cultural enrichment. The workshops alternate between classroom sessions and outings in Paris, to discover the city, its inhabitants, customs and history, while reinforcing the practice of the French language.

EIB Monceau Primary School teaches the French National Curriculum, under contract with the French Ministry of Education. The bilingual private school follows all national testing regimes and aims to instill a love for French language and culture. In addition to this, pupils receive daily English tuition from the age of 3, starting with 30 minutes per day and progressing to 25% of the school day by age 7.

Gaining a strong foundation in English

In primary school, the teaching of English occupies 25% of school time.

To begin with, English language learning is oral only, to avoid confusion until French language skills are acquired (except for native English speakers).

From Years 3 to 6, our students follow the various Cambridge programmes according to their ability level. Native literacy students follow an Oxford programme based on the Cambridge International Curriculum and read novels that are studied in English-speaking countries. In Year 6, students have the opportunity to take the Cambridge Young Learners exam in partnership with the British Council.

On Wednesday mornings, fun and educational activities are on offer, taught in English. This is a great way for our students to practice the skills they are already learning during their lessons, in a relaxed and informal environment.

Additional languages: Spanish and Mandarin

From the age of 9 (CE2), students receive 2 hours of Mandarin lessons per week, taught by a native speaker. From the age of 10 (CM1), they can choose to study Spanish as well, for an additional 2 hours per week. Both languages are assessed during the year to evaluate the progress of our students. These additional languages provide real achievements for the students and put them at a significant advantage when it comes to language learning at middle school (collège).

Immersion classes for non-French speakers

For students who arrive at bilingual school EIB Monceau without a strong foundation in the French language we offer a unique immersion program. Designed by our expert team our specialised teaching staff takes into account each student’s individual needs and cultural identity, as well as their language ability.

After one year in the immersion programme, students are ready to move regular classes in their age group.

Students in the immersion classes interact daily with the students in the French curriculum in order to ensure they are practising the language regularly. Small class sizes of 12-16 students maximum ensure each student gets the attention they need to flourish.

Immersion classes are available from Year 2 (CP) onwards. The families of immersion students are invited to speak with the head of department and students are given a short assessment to complete before they can be enrolled.

Non-Francophone pupils under the age of 6 are enrolled directly into the nursery classes of the French curriculum, where they receive extra attention so that they can integrate well.

A special welcome is reserved for Japanese families who wish to register their children in our immersion classes. Japanese children are welcomed by our specialist in the teaching system of Japan.
