The Arbre de la Liberté inaugurated at EIB de la Jonchère: a powerful symbol for the future

The Arbre de la Liberté inaugurated at EIB de la Jonchère: a powerful symbol for the future

On 9 May 2025, EIB de la Jonchère celebrated a solemn and meaningful moment: the inauguration of its Arbre de la Liberté (Tree of Liberty), for a commemorative ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in 1945 and Europe Day.

The project, led by Mrs Caquet, history-geography and moral and civic education teacher, and the teaching staff, brought together the whole school community for a moment of remembrance, reflection and unity. Mr Delesalle, former Head of EIB Paris, also honoured us with his presence at the inauguration ceremony. The copper beech tree, now decorated and identified with a symbolic plaque, is part of an approach that is both educational and civic-minded: making the school a living place for the transmission of fundamental values.

The rich and moving programme of the ceremony alternated between speeches, readings of personal accounts and poems, musical performances and symbolic hymns, notably the European anthem and the Marseillaise. Pupils from CM2, 5ème, 4ème, 3ème and 6ème took an active part through their speeches and readings.

The Arbre de la Liberté, a direct reference to the trees planted during the French Revolution to celebrate freedom, is becoming a landmark for future generations at EIB de la Jonchère. It represents the school's desire to cultivate historical memory, but also to promote awareness of citizenship, peace and European unity.

As Emillie Chaffaud, Head of School, pointed out in her opening speech:

“This place will allow us to come together to reflect, learn and grow. It will bear witness to our future official and solemn celebrations.”

From now on, this tree will be a symbolic gathering place, hosting the school's high points each year and reminding everyone of the importance of liberty, equality and fraternity.

The inauguration of the Arbre de la Liberté is also the culmination of a collective effort in which every pupil and teacher has made their own contribution. It embodies the spirit of EIB: to educate citizens who are open to the world, aware of the past so that they can build a better future.

Many thanks to all the participants and organisers for making this ceremony an unforgettable moment.
